Applicants should note that In terms of section 26(B) of the South African Citizenship Act, 1995, it is a punishable offence for a South African citizen of 18 years and older to leave or enter South Africa on a foreign passport.

In 2009, a new South African passport format was introduced which incorporates a chip device. For this reason, these documents are solely printed at the South African Department of Home Affairs head office in Pretoria, South Africa. Read more

South African passports are valid for 10 years (5 years for children) and cannot be renewed. Once the validity period of a passport expires, you will have to submit a new application for a passport.

A standard South African passport contains 32 pages, however, frequent travellers have the option to apply for a maxi passport containing 48 pages.

Children from the age of 16 require an adult passport.


For anyone aged 16 or over, you must have a South African identity number, a South African identity book.

For children under the age of 16, you must have a South African identity number by means of birth registration.

For children under the age of 16 without an identity number, you will need to register your child’s birth with South African Home Affairs, who will then allocate an identity number to the child. Once this is done, you can apply for a Child Passport. Please check the Foreign Birth Registration section in the Services menu option for requirements. For anyone with a Child South African passport that has reached the age of 16, you will need to apply for a South African Identity Book and an Adult South African passport. If your name has changed due to marriage, your marriage must be registered with South African Home Affairs. You can check if this has been done by clicking on this link: Click here to check your marital status If your marriage status has not changed on the system, SA Fast Track can assist you with the registration and ensure that the population register is updated. SA Fast Track need to be notified if you have submitted a similar application with any other agency, including Home Affairs, within the last six(6) months because this might have an impact on your application.
